How Employment is Changing at Anthropic (Anthropic, October 2026): junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9%
Anthropic's economists opened the company's own books to show what work looks like inside an AI-saturated firm. Interactive agent hours passed human hours in March 2026 and reached six times employee hours by August. The share of junior technical hires dropped from 27% to 9%, technical departments shrank from 61% to 56% of headcount, and coding-agent sessions by non-technical staff rose from 2 a month to 90. Output per person jumped when people adopted coding agents: commits per engineer are about five times higher than six months earlier, with no rise in reverted code.
The bottleneck has moved to human attention. Reading all agent output would take non-technical staff half their week, so meta-work such as monitoring pipelines and building visibility tools grew from 10% to 22% of sessions. Hiring managers now weight judgment and autonomy over domain expertise.
For founders this is the clearest data yet on what a company shaped around agents actually hires for, and on how revenue per employee can run two to four times the early Meta and Google levels.
