Shipped: Hybrid Quantum-Classical AI — Drone Gas Leak Detection

An open-source AI research proof of concept investigating how hybrid quantum-classical optimization can improve autonomous drone coordination for industrial gas leak detection.

The framework combines machine learning for gas leak severity estimation, quantum-inspired Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) for drone deployment and Voronoi partitioning, and classical 2-Opt Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) heuristics for route planning.

Using synthetic hazard environments and the GPLA-12 acoustic gas leakage dataset as a real-world data proxy, the system prioritizes high-risk areas and minimizes the time required for a drone fleet to reach potential leaks.

In a simulated seven-drone experiment, the hybrid approach achieved a mean time-to-detection of 10.0 seconds, compared with 43.9 seconds for an intensity-weighted K-Means baseline. The repository also includes hazard heatmaps, drone partitioning visualizations, and an animated mission demonstration.

The project explores applications in AI-assisted infrastructure monitoring, autonomous inspection, environmental safety, and intelligent emergency response. All quantum components currently run through classical simulation; this is a research POC rather than a field-validated or quantum-hardware deployment.

Cutting the average time for seven drones to reach a leak from 43.9 seconds to 10.0 is the number a plant or pipeline safety manager will care about, much more than the quantum part. In SaasRise I've seen SaaS CEOs who sell to industrial companies do best when they explain the result in the buyer's own terms, so I'd show this to one site operator and ask what finding leaks four times faster is worth to them.

Great suggestion, Ryan! I agree that the reduction from 43.9 seconds to 10.0 seconds is the finding that would resonate most with industrial operators. While the hybrid quantum-classical approach is interesting from a research perspective, the real business value is potentially identifying hazardous leaks sooner, reducing response times, and improving operational safety.

The results are currently based on simulation, so validating the approach in an actual industrial environment would be an important next step. I also like your suggestion of engaging plant or pipeline operators to understand their operational requirements and how they would quantify the value of faster detection. Ultimately, the technology needs to demonstrate measurable improvements in safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Appreciate the business perspective!
