BCG's 2026 Applied AI Index, drawn from a survey of more than 1,300 executives across more than 20 sectors, finds that almost half of companies now get measurable value from AI, but the gains are concentrated. Only 7.5% are future-built, and firms that pair strategic clarity with applied AI capture five times the value of those with neither. AI spending rose from about 1% of revenue to 3.3%, with roughly 80% sitting outside the IT budget.
Agents already produce 22% of total AI value, a share BCG expects to reach 39% by 2030, yet only 5% of companies have the controls autonomous agents need. For founders, the report sketches the buyer: enterprises that measure AI in the P&L, run one multiyear program, and want agent controls and workflow redesign rather than point tools.
