About Plural

Overview

Plural is a venture community of regulatory experts, operators, and investors providing intellectual and investment capital for the future of finance.

History and team

Plural launched in June 2022 with a €250M first fund. It was set up by four former founders: Taavet Hinrikus (co-founder of Wise), Sten Tamkivi, Ian Hogarth (founder of Songkick) and Khaled Helioui (former CEO of Bigpoint). Carina Namih, a founder and investor with a health tech background, joined in 2023 as the fifth partner. LinkedIn lists the firm as founded in 2021. The firm is headquartered in London, with a second office in Tallinn. Some directories list a different Washington, DC fintech firm called Plural VC, which uses plural.vc. This page covers the firm at pluralplatform.com. Plural raised a second fund of €400M about 18 months after the first, bringing its total to €660M. TechCrunch reported the second fund as $432M.

AI investing

TechCrunch reported in January 2024 that AI made up nearly one-third of Plural's investments. Frontier tech was 16% and climate and energy 14%. The firm runs a concentrated model. Each partner makes about two investments a year and works closely with those founders. Ian Hogarth has a public AI profile: he led the UK government's AI Foundation Model Taskforce and later chaired the UK AI Safety Institute. Examples from the first fund include Robin AI, a legal copilot that raised $26M in January 2024, Unitary (multimodal video content moderation) and Teton (AI nursing assistant). More recent AI-related rounds on the Lounge deals desk include Augur, Upside Robotics, Callosum and Metaview.

Stages and check sizes

Plural describes itself as early-stage. Third-party trackers list Pre-Seed, Seed and Series A as its entry stages. Press coverage of its second fund put typical checks at €1M to €15M. Its mission is stated as GDP-level impact on Europe. The portfolio spans the US as well as Europe. Plural does not publish a formal AI-only mandate or a per-round check range beyond this.
