About Bain Capital Ventures

History and team

The firm's own site says it was formed around 2001, when it launched a $250M fund as the venture division of Bain Capital, which dates to 1984. Fund XI closed at $1.6B above target, with Bain Capital partners and employees among the largest investors alongside pensions, endowments and foundations. Enrique Salem is co-managing partner. Partners listed on the firm's portfolio page include Merritt Hummer, Abby Meyers, Ryan Kim, Ajay Agarwal, C. Melas-Kyriazi and Aaref Hilaly.

AI investing

Fund XI targets AI infrastructure, applied AI, physical AI, science, security and technology-enabled services. Salem has said the firm has built its AI thesis over about a decade, starting with early commitments to Crusoe and Moveworks. In August 2026 the firm took part in a $700M financing for chip designer Etched at a $21B valuation. Other AI companies it names include Cognition, Decagon, Poolside, Legora, Atoms, Sunday Robotics, Adaptive Security and Norm. Lounge's deals desk also lists recent AI rounds for Lumilens, Corridor, Osmo Studio, Tomo, The Sentience Company and Nyne.ai.

Stages and check sizes

The firm says Fund XI will invest in roughly 30 to 40 companies, mainly from seed through Series B. In Fund X, raised in 2023, more than 82% of invested dollars went into pre-seed, seed, Series A or Series B rounds. The firm does not publish check sizes. Third-party directories disagree: one lists seed checks of $500k to $3M, another lists $1M to $20M, so founders should confirm terms directly.
