Avalara sells a SaaS platform that calculates tax rates, manages exemption certificates, files returns and handles e-invoicing across thousands of jurisdictions. It integrates with more than 1,000 ERP, accounting and e-commerce systems and has recently added agentic AI features. Customers number 30,000+ (2022) and include Box, Pinterest and Adidas. Revenue comes from subscriptions and returns-processing fees. It reported $698.9M revenue in 2021, went public in 2018 (NYSE: AVLR) and was taken private by Vista Equity Partners in 2022 for $8.4B. BlackRock-led investors put in $500M of equity in November 2025, and Hugo Sarrazin became CEO in May 2026.
