Building GCC Match: Connecting Real Business Opportunities Between Malaysia and the GCC

Hello Lounge community! 👋

Yesterday, I introduced GCC Connect, our platform for building professional relationships between Malaysia and the Gulf region.

Today, I'd like to share another initiative we're developing at TGPU Gulf Advisory: GCC Match.

Both platforms share a common vision, but they serve different purposes.

GCC Connect is about people and relationships.

GCC Match is about specific business needs and commercial opportunities.

A Malaysian company may be looking for a buyer in Saudi Arabia.

A UAE business may need a reliable Malaysian supplier.

Another company may be searching for a distributor, strategic partner, or support entering a new market.

The challenge isn't always finding more contacts.

It's finding the right counterparties, understanding their actual requirements, and establishing enough trust to explore a meaningful business relationship.

That's the problem we're trying to address through GCC Match.

Rather than creating another large business directory, we're developing a more structured approach where businesses can submit their requirements, opportunities can be assessed, and relevant commercial connections can be explored.

We're also considering a future feature called GCC Match Showcase.

The idea is to eventually provide businesses with a professional space to present their products, services, and capabilities to relevant buyers and potential partners.

It's still part of our future roadmap, and we want to validate genuine business demand before expanding further.

I'd appreciate advice from fellow founders.

For those who have built B2B marketplaces, sourcing platforms, or international business networks:

What would you prioritise first to build trust and attract genuine buyers and suppliers to an early-stage matching platform?

I'm also looking to connect with 2–3 founders or business operators in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE who would be open to sharing practical feedback or exploring a potential pilot collaboration.

Our goal is simple:

Connect the right people.
Understand the real requirement.

Create the right commercial connection.

I'm looking forward to learning from your experiences and exchanging ideas.

Halal food and ingredients could be the one category to launch GCC Match with, since Malaysian halal producers already want Saudi and UAE buyers and Gulf importers already trust Malaysian halal certification. I'd sign up a handful of exhibitors from MIHAS, the big Malaysian halal trade show, and charge each supplier only when a qualified Gulf buyer actually agrees to a meeting.

That's a very practical suggestion, Ryan. Thank you. I agree that starting GCC Match with one focused category makes more sense than trying to cover multiple industries from the beginning. Halal food and ingredients could be a strong starting point, especially given Malaysia's established halal ecosystem and the opportunities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Your suggestion about approaching MIHAS exhibitors is particularly useful. Rather than simply building a large supplier directory, I'd prefer to work with a small number of verified suppliers, understand their export readiness, and identify genuine requirements from qualified Gulf buyers. I also like the idea of connecting fees to meaningful commercial outcomes, such as a qualified buyer agreeing to a meeting. One consideration I'm exploring is a hybrid commercial model: a modest upfront professional engagement fee to cover qualification and initial work, with an additional success-based fee when a defined milestone is achieved. That would help keep the service sustainable while ensuring both sides are serious about the opportunity. I'm considering testing this with 3–5 Malaysian halal suppliers before expanding further. Would you recommend validating buyer demand in Saudi Arabia and the UAE first, before actively onboarding suppliers? I appreciate your guidance, Ryan. It's helping me think more carefully about turning GCC Match into a focused, sustainable service.
