OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra helped design a Codex device in under a week
Two OpenAI employees used GPT-6 Astra to create a device for interacting with Codex, including its enclosure, circuit board design and software. A manufacturer then produced prototypes. The company also described advances on an internal engineering benchmark, though it disclosed few supporting details.
The project is a demonstration of how far model-driven hardware design has come, and the revisions show where it still falls short. Engineering output from a model is only as useful as the constraints it has been given, and manufacturing rules were the gap here.
For founders building hardware or device-linked AI products, the lesson is to treat model-generated designs as drafts. Check them against supplier feedback, tolerances and assembly rules before committing to tooling, and budget time for revision cycles.
