Google ties access to Search for schools to acceptance of its AI features

Google is changing the default for K-12 student accounts so that Gemini and other AI tools start switched off in 2027. Schools can still turn on individual AI services, but turning off AI entirely also removes Google Search, and students see a notice that the service is unavailable through their school. Google told The New York Times, as 9to5Google reported, that two school options arrive in early 2027: AI Overviews and other AI features on, or Guided Learning in their place.
Guided Learning is the alternative. Engadget reports it is now available globally in Google Classroom and breaks problems into step-by-step explanations with quizzes. Google is also bringing these tools to Search for student accounts, which it presents as a way to curb cheating. Forbes reports students cannot simply switch off Guided Learning inside those activities.
Critics include New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who accused Google of using its search monopoly to pressure schools, according to SOFx. Common Sense Media rated Google's AI Search an unacceptable risk for young users, as The Neuron's digest noted. Google says schools asked for more control and that it will keep working with educators.
Why it matters
For companies selling into K-12, the platform default now decides whether a school keeps a conventional tool. A district that wants AI off may also lose Search, so a product that depends on students reaching Search results could see its use change without any action on the vendor's part. Builders should plan separate AI-on and AI-off modes and test how their features behave when a platform changes its defaults. Sales teams should confirm which settings a district uses before a pilot begins.
For investors, the case shows that bundled platform power can push AI adoption into markets where buyers would otherwise opt out. Companies selling AI tutoring or classroom tools may gain demand, but they also compete with a platform that controls both the default settings and the student account. Diligence should ask how much revenue depends on one platform's education settings, and whether the product still works when AI is limited.
