About Georgian

Overview

Growth-stage investor; led Replit's Series D.

History and team

Georgian was founded in 2008 in Toronto by Justin LaFayette, Simon Chong and John Berton. It was formerly called Georgian Partners. BetaKit reports that it initially focused on applied analytics software and later moved toward artificial intelligence. Fund sizes reported in the press: Fund I closed at $70M in 2010, Fund II at CAD 200M in 2015, and Fund IV at US$550M (about CAD 715M) in 2018. BetaKit reported Fund V at US$850M (CAD 1.1B), described as the first Canadian venture fund above CAD 1B. Georgian's site says it now invests from its sixth flagship growth fund. I did not find a public size for that fund. Margaret Wu is a Lead Investor at Georgian and was quoted on its AI investments. The firm also runs an in-house AI Lab of ML engineers and scientists who work with portfolio companies on production AI.

AI investing

Georgian describes itself as a growth equity firm investing in B2B software across the AI technology stack. That covers infrastructure, applications, cybersecurity and developer tools. Beyond capital, it offers applied AI research and embedded engineers from its AI Lab. It also publishes an AI Landscape research series. For earlier checks into emerging technologies or markets, it uses a category it calls "Pathfinder" deals. It described its seed investment in Dominion Dynamics, a defense tech company, as one of these.

Stages and check sizes

Georgian's site says its initial investments target $25M or more, with follow-on potential. Its main focus is growth rounds, and it usually leads or co-leads. An investor database, F4, lists typical checks of $20M to $75M. That figure is not from Georgian, so treat it as an estimate. Pathfinder deals are earlier and smaller, such as the CAD 21M Dominion Dynamics seed round.
