About Disruptive

Overview

Late-stage investor and repeat lead in Groq's financing.

History and team

Disruptive was founded in 2012 by Alex Davis, who is its founder, chairman and CEO. Press describes Davis as the grandson of oil and media billionaire Marvin Davis. The firm was previously based in Los Angeles and is now headquartered in Dallas at The Crescent. In May 2026 it named Ash Spiegelberg chief strategy officer, and the announcement said the firm had grown to about $10 billion in assets under advisement. One directory lists a team of about 43 people. The sources reviewed do not name partners who lead AI investing separately from Davis.

AI investing

Disruptive describes itself as backing late- and growth-stage private technology companies through primary, secondary and structured transactions, with a focus on AI, AI infrastructure and defense technology. It has said it does not raise blind pool funds or charge management fees. It has instead assembled investor groups around individual deals, usually through special purpose vehicles. Davis is executive chairman of Groq, so the firm works as an operator-investor there and not only as a financier. In 2026 the firm led Groq's $650M round (announced June 22, alongside Infinitum) and its $350M Series A (announced August 17, at a $3.5B valuation). It also took part in Helsing's $1.8B Series E in July 2026, a round led by Dragoneer and Lightspeed. Reports in October 2026 say the firm is raising its first pooled megafund.

Stages and check sizes

The firm targets companies at or near public scale, at Series C, Series D and growth stages. Reports say the new fund plans about 10 late- and growth-stage investments over two years. Another profile says the firm backs roughly six companies a year and does not take board seats, though Davis chairs Groq. No check size range has been published. Funds known publicly: a mid-stage defense-focused fund that closed in 2023, and a new fund that has secured $7.5B in commitments toward a target of up to $10B, according to The Wall Street Journal and Dallas Morning News. The commitments come mostly from earlier investors, including institutions and family offices.
