About Baillie Gifford

Overview

Baillie Gifford & Co Limited operates as an investment management firm. The Company offers portfolio management, consulting, financial planning, and investment supervisory services, as well as manages equity and bond portfolios. Baillie Gifford serves & Co serves customers worldwide.

History and team

Baillie Gifford was founded in Edinburgh in 1908 and is still headquartered there. Its founders were Augustus Baillie and Carlyle Gifford, who first formed it as a legal partnership. It is wholly owned by partners who all work in the firm. Tim Campbell is CEO and managing partner, with Malcolm MacColl and Amy Atack as managing partners. Wikipedia lists assets under management of £286.3 billion and 1,640 staff in 2025. Offices include Edinburgh, London, New York, Dublin, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Toronto. The firm does not publish a named partner who leads AI investing.

AI investing

Baillie Gifford has no separate AI fund. It invests in AI through its general growth strategies, including the Scottish Mortgage and US Growth investment trusts and the Schiehallion private-company fund. The firm says it has put about $12 billion into more than 170 private growth companies since 2012. It builds sector-agnostic portfolios of about 30 private companies. In Anthropic's case, its own profile says it first invested in August 2025, after tracking the company for two years. The firm describes the thesis as Claude Code adoption among developers and a push into regulated enterprise sectors such as financial services. Its public write-up gives the valuation it paid as an enterprise value of $180bn, about 20 times projected year-end recurring revenue. Scottish Mortgage later marked up its Anthropic holding ahead of a planned listing.

Stages and check sizes

Baillie Gifford does not publish a stage focus or a standard check size for private deals. It says it often invests early in category-defining companies. Its examples include SpaceX in 2018, ByteDance in 2019 and Anthropic in 2025. Some of its AI positions are very large late-stage rounds, such as Anthropic's Series F of $13B and Wayve's Series D of $1.26B. Scottish Mortgage put £132m of new capital into private companies in the year to 31 March 2025, across all sectors. That trust limits private holdings to 30% of total assets at the time of purchase. Third-party sites quote $100m+ tickets, but the firm does not confirm this.
