MCP Server by XWiki: Give your AI your wiki's knowledge while keeping the control
XWiki's extension reached version 0.9 in beta with Solr-backed search across wiki pages, plus reading, editing and creating pages. The extension's documentation lists 88 active installs and a GNU Lesser General Public License 2.1 license, and XWiki SAS offers paid support. If a capability is missing from the MCP layer, the REST API can usually cover it. Earlier XWiki MCP projects were mostly community efforts. One GitHub project uses Docker and the REST API to search, read and write pages. Another package defaults to Solr because the HQL-based search endpoint effectively searches page names only. The protocol behind these connectors, introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, is an open standard. For an AI company, the appeal is control. XWiki, the MCP server and the AI model can all be self-hosted. The protocol itself adds little security, since MCP doesn't have native authentication, authorization, or encryption. Teams exposing wiki data to agents need to add security measures like Transport Layer Security (TLS) and rate limiting before going live.
