beacon.sh: Open-source self-improving memory for AI coding agents
Asymptote Labs, a New York startup, launched Beacon on Product Hunt on November 2, 2026, and the product ranked first on that day's leaderboard. A leaderboard snapshot for the date listed 332 points and 62 comments, though those tallies change through the day. Beacon is a free, open-source memory layer that captures agent session history from Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode and more than 20 other agent harnesses. It then turns useful debugging patterns, corrections and workflows into knowledge that future agents can retrieve through MCP or Agent Skills.
Installation runs through Homebrew on macOS, an MSI package on Windows, or deb and rpm packages on Linux. Setup offers a hosted Beacon Cloud option by default, with an explicit local-only opt-out. The company says secrets are redacted, particularly in its cloud service. On funding, The Next Web reported that the company raised a $5.5M seed round led by Tower Research Ventures, and that its paid platform builds on Beacon to block risky actions such as data leaks. Asymptote says security teams already use its tools in production but has not named any customers.
Why it matters
For teams building coding tools, the notable change is that agent history becomes a portable asset instead of a log locked inside one product. If a developer's corrections and debugging patterns follow them from Claude Code to Cursor or Codex, switching costs between harnesses drop, and vendors that keep session data closed face more pressure. For operators, one record of what each agent did, and on whose behalf, gives engineering and security leads a single place to audit activity across tools.
For investors, the round is a bet that memory and oversight for agents will sit in a separate layer from the models themselves. Tower Research Ventures says it found Asymptote through the open-source project, which suggests open adoption can feed a paid enterprise pipeline. Founders should note the structure: a free local core for developers, with paid governance and blocking aimed at security buyers. That model depends on converting teams that already run agents in production.
