Apple to run Alibaba's Qwen inside Apple Intelligence for iPhones in China

Apple will connect Qwen, the model built by Alibaba, to Apple Intelligence on iPhones in China, according to Seoul Economic Daily. The paper says the arrangement is Apple's first with a domestic model maker since Apple Intelligence won clearance in the Chinese market. Alibaba states that Qwen will be reachable from inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, and that people may choose whether to switch it on.
Testing opens on November 4 in the iOS developer beta, and the general release is tied to iOS 27.3 in December. A device qualifies when its location and Apple Account country are both set to China, or when the buyer purchased it in China. The first batch covers iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, with device and Siri languages set to English or Simplified Chinese, according to Global Times.
Apple's own models still run Live Translation, Clean Up and Genmoji, and the rebuilt Siri AI shown at WWDC 2026 is excluded from this launch, per TheNextWeb. China's internet regulator confirmed the Apple Intelligence licence in July. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a beta briefly reached some mainland users that same day before Apple pulled it within about an hour.
Why it matters
For companies selling AI products into China, this deal shows that the model behind a platform's features can change by market. A model may reach Chinese users only through a partner the platform selected and regulators approved, so distribution depends on decisions made outside the vendor's control. Founders should treat that as a standing condition of the market rather than a one-time launch hurdle.
For investors, the signal is mixed. Alibaba gains placement inside the default assistant on a major global device line, while Apple fills a gap that opened roughly two years after the US launch of Apple Intelligence. The first features still depend on a December release that Apple schedules. Investors should build regulatory timing and platform calendars into any China revenue case.
