Smooth Recorder: Mac screen recordings that look edited when you hit stop
The app costs $9 once with no subscription, and it requires macOS 15 or later. Beyond auto-zooms, a smooth cursor and one-click captions, it also handles screenshots, GIFs, scrolling capture and text capture. Captions, text recognition and redaction run on the Mac itself, so footage stays local. A recent addition is 3D angles, and the app also adds a library that sits in the notch.
The developer's own comparison table lists Screen Studio at $29 a month, CleanShot X at $35 plus $19 a year for updates, and Loom at $18 a month. It also stresses that the app is native, while Screen Studio and Loom are described as Electron apps. The auto-zoom category is crowded with one-time-purchase rivals, among them SmoothCut (macOS and Windows) and SmoothCapture, which lists a free trial.
For AI founders, the pattern is that automated polish for product demos is becoming a commodity feature. Prices are falling toward single-digit one-time fees, and on-device processing is now a selling point against cloud captioning. Teams that make launch videos can get a finished demo at near-zero cost. Anyone selling a subscription tool in this space faces pressure from cheap local alternatives.
