Segment sells a cloud customer data platform (CDP) with a single API for event collection, identity resolution and profile unification. It connects to hundreds of downstream tools such as CRMs, ad networks and data warehouses. It was founded in 2011–2012 and came out of Y Combinator. It raised over $283M in venture funding before Twilio acquired it in 2020 for about $3.2B. It now runs as Twilio's CDP business unit, sold on a SaaS subscription model. Reported customers number 25,000+, including Intuit, FOX, IBM and Levi's, and IDC ranked it the #1 CDP by 2022 market share.
