Multimodal Technologies, which does business as M*Modal, sells cloud-based, conversational-AI clinical documentation. Its products cover speech recognition, medical transcription, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and coding for healthcare providers. It was founded in 2001 as a Carnegie Mellon spinout in Pittsburgh, merged with MedQuist in 2011, and went through a $1.1B buyout in 2012 and a Chapter 11 filing in 2014. In December 2018 3M agreed to buy its technology business (about 750 employees, about $200M annual revenue) for $1B. M*Modal kept the transcription, scribing and coding services business.
