TextNow is a mobile app and wireless carrier that gives each user a phone number for calls and texts over Wi-Fi or cellular, with data plans available. Its customers are mostly U.S. consumers who want a free or low-cost line or a second number. It uses a freemium model, with ad revenue from free users and paid plans and phone sales. Founded in 2009, it reported about $100M in annual revenue in 2024. It has raised only a small amount of seed funding (roughly $1–3M, depending on the source) and is described as the largest provider of free phone service in the U.S.
