Chinese cloud giants expect about 1% of $70B Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 order within four months
Bloomberg reported on November 4, 2026 that Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance and other Chinese AI and cloud firms have ordered about 6 million Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 chips, worth roughly $70 billion at more than $11,000 each. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that buyers expect only some tens of thousands of units within four months, about 1% of the total. Investing.com, which carried the report, gave the near-term figure as about ten thousand, but 1% of 6 million is closer to 60,000.
The RTX Pro 5500 is a workstation card that is not covered by the export restrictions on Nvidia's most advanced chips, which makes it one of the most capable Nvidia parts Chinese firms can still buy. Reuters reported on October 20 that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent alone had ordered more than 3 million cards at about $11,400 each, a sticker value above $35 billion. Nvidia has not confirmed the order totals in the reporting reviewed, and the buyers did not respond to requests for comment.
Reuters also reported that Nvidia told partners it could fill only 5% to 10% of requests, with no more than 3 million RTX Pro 5500 cards possible worldwide in 2027. Nvidia and TSMC are reportedly shifting capacity toward next-generation Rubin products, keeping supply tight.
Why it matters
For teams building on Chinese infrastructure, a large order book is weak evidence of near-term GPU availability. The gap between about 6 million ordered and tens of thousands expected means allocation, not demand, sets the pace. Procurement should be tied to confirmed delivery dates and written allocation terms rather than announced volumes, and hardware-heavy roadmaps that assume on-time arrival carry real slippage risk.
For sellers and investors, the story shows that headline order values can overstate near-term revenue. At Bloomberg's figures the order is worth $70 billion on paper, while buyers expect deliveries worth a small fraction of that within four months. Anyone valuing Nvidia's China exposure, or selling into Chinese AI clouds, should model shipments and timing rather than backlog. Rationed imported supply also strengthens the case for domestic chip suppliers in China.
