Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund

Anthropic said on October 18 that it is committing 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity. The company said the commitment is subject to stockholder approval. An extra 2% can be added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline, so the fund's stake grows with the business. Anthropic said its own public benefit work, including AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research and discounted Claude access for nonprofits and scientific institutions, stays inside the company because those activities carry both public and commercial value. For founders, the structure is a useful reference point. It ties a mission commitment to equity in a formal vehicle, not only to a statement of values, and it shows how a public benefit corporation can set aside stock for outside purposes as valuation rises.
