Surge AI, run by founder and CEO Edwin Chen, provides high-quality human-generated training and evaluation data. It uses a platform and a network of vetted expert contractors, including doctors, lawyers and engineers. Customers include Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Meta. It earns revenue by selling data and labeling services to AI labs. It was bootstrapped and profitable, and reported well over $1B in 2024 revenue. In 2025 it was reported to be in talks to raise up to $1B at a valuation of about $25–30B, its first outside capital.
