Builder.ai
Builder.ai sold an AI-assisted platform for building custom apps and websites to businesses. It entered insolvency in May 2025 and no longer operates.
Builder.ai, also known as Engineer.ai, marketed an AI platform ("Natasha") that aimed to simplify building apps and websites for businesses. The Microsoft-backed unicorn raised more than $450 million in funding. A 2019 Wall Street Journal investigation found that the AI was largely about 700 human engineers in India doing the coding. It claimed $220 million in anticipated 2024 revenue, but actual revenue was closer to $55 million. In May 2025 it announced insolvency proceedings after creditors seized $50 million borrowed in October 2024. By June 2025 it had laid off about 80% of its workforce, around 1,000 people.
