Exa Monitors v2: Web search on a schedule that calls your agent, $2/1k runs
Exa has released Monitors v2, a rewrite of its scheduled search product for AI agents, with the launch posted on November 2, 2026. A monitor runs a search on a fixed cadence and sends a webhook only when it finds material that is new and relevant. Developers describe what to watch, pick an interval, and receive either a text summary or structured JSON, with citations attached. Exa says existing monitor users do not need to change their code.
Each run moves through three stages. Retrieval searches Exa's full index using a time window matched to the monitor's interval. Judging discards pages the monitor has already seen, then tests each remaining page for relevance, source legitimacy, new information and event timing. The final stage composes the summary or JSON and calls the webhook. Metadata can be attached to a monitor so one agent can route alerts to many users or workspaces. In side-by-side tests on production monitors, Exa reports that every v2 update was relevant and that feeds were noticeably quieter than v1.
Pricing is $2 per 1,000 runs, down from $15, which Exa describes as more than seven times cheaper. AlphaSignal's worked example puts 1,000 monitors checking once a day at about 30,000 runs a month, or $60 in run charges, before model calls and other Exa usage. Exa's pricing page also lists $1 per 1,000 results above the first 10 in a request and $1 per 1,000 AI page summaries.
Why it matters
For founders building agents, the cost of always-on monitoring drops sharply. A workload that once carried a $15 per thousand run charge now costs $2, which makes background watching practical for smaller products and free tiers. Relevance filtering also moves part of the alert logic from the developer's own pipeline to the search provider. Product teams should test whether the provider's judgment matches their domain before they rely on it for customer-facing alerts.
For operators and investors, the release shows search vendors moving from answering one-off queries toward supplying event streams. A seven-fold price cut from a vendor that raised $250 million at a $2.2 billion valuation in May 2026 signals a push for volume over per-run margin. Buyers comparing agent infrastructure should total run charges, result fees and summary fees, not just the headline rate.
