Shield AI secures $250M in debt financing
Blackstone is the lender behind the $250M facility, which is structured as a delayed-draw loan. Shield AI can borrow against it later instead of taking the full amount up front. It was part of a March 2026 package that also included a $1.5B Series G led by Advent International, with JPMorganChase's Security and Resiliency Initiative co-leading, plus $500M in fixed-return preferred equity from Blackstone. The post-money valuation was $12.7B. Proceeds are earmarked for the planned acquisition of simulation software maker Aechelon, the Hivemind Foundation Model, and the X-BAT AI-piloted fighter program. The blurb's "more than $100M" total understates the position. Earlier rounds included a $200M venture debt facility from Hercules Capital in December 2023, and a $240M Series F-1 in March 2025 at $5.3B, led by L3Harris and Hanwha. Shield AI's valuation has more than doubled in a year. For founders building hardware-heavy or defense-adjacent AI companies, the structure is the useful part. Committed but undrawn debt sits next to equity and preferred capital, which covers capital-intensive programs with long timelines (X-BAT production is targeted for 2029) without diluting further. Lenders such as Blackstone are now competing with venture investors for large AI and defense deals.
