Rune Energy raises $40M Series A
Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Activate Capital, Committed Capital, Timeless Partners and Logos Fund also took part. The money arrived with the launch of RELIC, a unit that sits behind the meter and draws clipped and curtailed power straight from the solar array, bypassing grid interconnection. The company says installation takes 60 minutes and customers can be energized in as little as six weeks from contract. Deployed capacity totals 1 MW across Texas, California and Massachusetts. The newest site is a 200MW solar facility in Texas. The supply being tapped is large. Texas curtailed nearly 10,000 GWh of renewable energy last year, and California more than 3,700 GWh. Rune claims an 85% cut in non-compute infrastructure costs, or $620 million on a 100MW deployment. Those figures come from the company and have not been independently verified. Proceeds go toward more deployments with renewable operators and more customers seeking inference capacity. For AI founders, the constraint on compute is increasingly power access, not only chips. Inference capacity at solar sites could become an alternative supply source, especially for workloads that tolerate distributed, smaller clusters. At 1 MW deployed, though, the model is early, and reliability, pricing and customer terms are still unproven. Valuation has not been disclosed.
