Etched raises $700M at $21B, led by Jane Street, a month after its $300M Series C
Jane Street received the first rack Etched shipped and tested the hardware before leading the round. The Series D also drew Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Tiger Global, Bain Capital Ventures, Neo and Blackstone. Etched says total funding is now $1.9B, with more than $1B in customer contracts across AI companies and cloud providers. The new capital is meant to finance production. The price path is steep. Etched was valued at $5 billion in December, then $10.3 billion in July. Jane Street was not new to the cap table: Hudson River Trading, Jump Trading and Two Sigma were already backers, so several trading firms are funding a chip maker where latency is money. The design pairs Low Voltage Inference with Cluster Scale Memory, a pool shared across a whole cluster. For founders, the open question is delivery. Investors are pricing in the move from working silicon and a first deployment to repeatable data-center manufacturing. Teams that depend on inference capacity gain a possible alternative to Nvidia, but one with a single named customer so far. Supply terms and pricing for later buyers have not been disclosed.
