G5 Labs raises $14M Seed
Pillar VC and Battery Ventures co-led the round, with Omega Venture Partners, Encoded Ventures and angels including Jeff Dean taking part. Valuation has not been disclosed. The money goes toward hiring engineers, scaling customer deployments and developing the platform and its ontology compiler. The product is a self-learning, bi-directional compiler that converts natural language to code and back using an ontology graph. It is meant to sit above existing coding models instead of replacing them. The company says it is already in production with Fortune 1000 customers, focused on legacy modernization in regulated industries. Its website claims "millions of lines" of legacy code have been converted into semantic ontologies. CEO Tim Kraska is an MIT CSAIL professor who previously co-founded Einblick Analytics, which Databricks acquired. For AI founders, the bet is that the scarce layer in enterprise software is governance, not code generation. G5's pitch covers tracing code back to intent, resolving merge conflicts at the semantic level, and enforcing policies such as GDPR across old and new systems. Startups building on top of coding models should expect enterprise buyers to ask for audit trails and policy controls. Teams selling code generation alone may face a better-positioned competitor in regulated accounts.
