Volta raises $300M Series A at $2.4B for AI infrastructure
The $300M covers both a seed round and a Series A, and Michael Dell's family office and Matter Venture Partners also took part. Alongside the equity, Volta announced a $10B, six-year cloud contract for a 133 MW site in Norway built with Bitdeer on Nvidia Vera Rubin systems. Bloomberg reported the customer is Anthropic. The company was founded in early 2026 by two former Brookfield infrastructure executives, and says its pipeline exceeds 1 GW across North America and Europe. A separate $5B financing program with asset manager Azora is meant to fund its AI data centers. The debt side has been harder. Semafor reported that lenders pushed back on a $5B Norway financing, citing the company's thin track record and its reliance on Anthropic. The deal was expected to price at an interest rate of at least 11%, with Apollo anchoring it at $1.5B. The rate would fall if Anthropic gained an investment-grade rating. Dealroom noted that a16z had largely avoided neoclouds before this deal, and that critics see circular financing risk in chip suppliers backing their own buyers. For AI founders, the lesson is that compute access increasingly depends on who can arrange cheap capital, not just who owns GPUs. Volta targets smaller labs priced out of frontier hardware, but its high borrowing costs show that lenders are pricing in counterparty concentration.
