Korean AI study assistant Turing raises $5M Series B
GPAI, the product behind the round, is used at 415 US universities, including MIT, Stanford and Harvard. Korea and the United States are its main markets. Korea Development Bank, Kingo and Company K Partners are new investors, and existing backer Kolon Investment followed on. The round is worth about $5.1 million. The company will widen its focus from science and engineering students to all majors worldwide, and it made all paid features free as the academic year began. The money goes toward user growth and B2B and B2G partnerships with universities and research institutions. The company also has a second line of business. It supplies more than 300,000 math AI-ready data items to firms in Korea's national foundation model project, to help improve LLM reasoning. Korean edtech rival QANDA has also taken strategic money: Mathpresso raised 10 billion KRW from KT in September 2023. For founders, the free tier is the signal. A seed-to-Series B company is giving away features that used to be paid, which suggests it values student distribution above near-term subscription revenue. Institutional sales are the stated route to revenue. Anyone building a consumer AI tool for students should expect similar pricing pressure. The round is small by AI standards, so reach and unit economics matter more than capital.
