Cohere and Aleph Alpha agree to merge in deal reportedly valuing combined firm at $20B
Cohere and Aleph Alpha signed a definitive business combination agreement on September 16, and the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. Schwarz Group, the German retailer backing the deal, had planned to provide 500 million euros, about $573 million, in financing. Aleph Alpha is based in Heidelberg and sells mainly to enterprises and government agencies.
Cohere's product line is built around its Command family of open-source language models. Aleph Alpha released its Kolibri model in October, adding a German-English option to the combined portfolio. The pairing joins a Canadian enterprise model developer with a German firm that has built a European customer base.
For founders, the deal shows second-tier model developers consolidating when training and compute costs outgrow standalone revenue. Teams building on foundation models should watch how merged vendors handle pricing, data residency and roadmap changes while regulators review the transaction.
