BackOps AI raises $42M Series B
Insight Partners led the round, with existing backers Theory Ventures, Construct Capital, Gradient Ventures and 10VC also participating. Valuation was not disclosed. The San Francisco company, founded in 2024 and led by CEO Sean McCarthy, sells an AI layer that resolves carrier claims, chargeback disputes and complex billing for grocery, retail, logistics and distribution firms. Funds will go toward extending that layer into more operations, finance and customer service processes, plus hiring across product, engineering and go-to-market. The company's own figures, not independently audited, center on one customer that has run more than 500,000 claims through the platform. As that customer's volume grew 150x, automated resolution rose from 87% to 99%. A separate customer reportedly cut a billing process from 28 hours to 14 minutes. Reports on a different deployment cite roughly $660,000 in projected annual fully loaded costs. Prebuilt carrier-system connections and resolution patterns reused across customers are the product's main pitch against general-purpose AI, which does not arrive knowing these processes. For AI founders, the round is a data point on vertical agents. McCarthy argues that as models get cheaper, the durable moat is proprietary data from completing the work, meaning context, decisions and outcomes. Two raises in six months suggest investors reward narrow workflows with measurable automation rates over horizontal tooling.
