CivilGrid raises $26M Series A
Spark Capital led the round, with Energy Impact Partners, Afore, A*, Ford Street Ventures and SNR also taking part. Energy Impact Partners counts several utilities among its limited partners, which fits CivilGrid's customer base. Valuation was not disclosed. The company plans to spend the money on national expansion and product development. The San Francisco startup was founded in 2020 by Josh Mackanic, who spent a decade as an engineer at PG&E. Its software merges utility asset records, land ownership, and environmental and geotechnical data into one map, so teams can judge whether a site is workable before construction starts. Customers include government agencies, civil engineering firms and utilities. The company's headline proof point is a PG&E study that found more than $60M in avoidable paving conflicts across 1,600 gas distribution projects. It also claims a 40% cut in field research and scoping timelines up to four months shorter. For AI founders, the deal is a reminder that value in regulated, physical industries often comes from assembling fragmented data before any model is applied. A single anchor customer with audited savings is what let this company raise. Procurement cycles at utilities and municipalities are slow, though, so growth beyond the anchor account is the open question.
