CScale raises $145M Series C for AI infrastructure
CScale left stealth on Sept. 30 with the round, which Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners and Premji Invest co-led. Sutter Hill Ventures, a backer since the company's start, and Maverick Silicon also participated. The Palo Alto company was founded in 2023 and is developing an integrated optical light engine for AI scale-up systems. Its argument is about reliability. At the scale of thousands of linked accelerators, optical failures that are rare on one link can become recurring events across a fleet. The design is meant to contain those failures without disrupting the wider system.
The category is crowded. One analysis notes that CScale's $188M total is modest next to Ayar Labs, which raised $650M this year at a valuation above $5 billion. Chip vendors are also backing outside specialists instead of building this layer entirely in-house.
For AI builders, the interconnect is becoming a limit on how large training and inference clusters can get. That limit affects cost, uptime and when capacity can be delivered. Founders who depend on large GPU clusters should watch whether optical link reliability becomes a procurement criterion. Founders building in networking or photonics should note that investors are now writing large checks for specialized components of the data center.
